'Take this dog back, it clashes with our curtains'

The woman, who has not been named, visited Harvey the Jack Russell in a rescue centre several times before taking him home.

But later the same day, she called to say that there was a problem with the ginger and white dog because he didn’t go with her curtains. Two days later, she returned Harvey to the Jasmil Kennels and Cattery in Lower Halstow, near Sittingbourne, Kent.

Kennel boss Barry Shuttleworth said he was ‘horrified’ when the woman, in her late 40s, gave such a trivial reason for handing back the three-year-old pet.

His wife Corrina, 38, added that there had been a spate of dogs being returned for ‘ridiculous reasons’, such as a Labrador who ‘wouldn’t bark’ and another pet who was judged ‘not cuddly enough’.

She said: ‘In Harvey’s case the woman was in the kennels looking for a dog when Harvey was brought in as a stray.

‘She fell in love with him straight away and visited him for seven days before being allowed to take him home.

‘The day she took him home, she called us up and said there was a problem with Harvey as his colouring clashed with her lounge curtains. We told her to put him in another room, but two days later she brought him back and said she had spent a lot of money on her curtains and that she didn’t want Harvey any more.’

Mr Shuttleworth, 42, added: ‘Some people just don’t think about why they want a dog, and they need to so that so many dogs don’t end up unwanted.

My comment:

I think it’s sickening, to say the least. Such people shouldn’t be allowed to keep pets, in the 1st place. What the hell is she talking about? She spent so much money on curtains & the dog doesn’t go with it. It’s like hurting a living being is no big deal. It’s the god-damn curtain, which is more important than life. Some people would remain a huge joke till the end of time. I just hope Harvey finds a loving home. He certainly deserves better parents.

Happy Animal Tales: Foxy

Foxy Before

“When I went to the ASPCA on March 5, 2010, I wasn't looking for the most adoptable puppy. I wanted a dog who was going to be more of a challenge—one that had had a really rough start in life. That's what I found with Faye (now Foxy),” says Sloan Von Spiessbach.

Foxy, an underweight American Eskimo mix with bald patches, anemia, 10 missing teeth and GI problems, came from a puppy mill from Holly Springs, Mississippi. Foxy and more than 90 dogs in deplorable conditions were captured by ASPCA team.

As a puppy mill survivor, Foxy was unused to basic doggy activities like walking on a leash, running and stretching, and experiencing new sights and sounds. Because of that background, Sloan discovered, Foxy’s “physical issues were nothing compared to her paralyzing fear. She was literally frozen stiff and would ‘hit the deck’ if you moved too quickly around her. She didn't even know what to do when given a toy.”

A Very Happy Foxy Today

Ten months of love and encouragement later, not only does Foxy know what to do with a toy, she keeps dozens. “The furious squeaking of her toys can be heard all day long,” Sloan says. “At night she collects all of the toys strewn throughout the living room and carries them back to her room one by one. She puts them in her bed before jumping into bed with me. She has to have everything in order.”

Foxy is flourishing with her new family, including her 80–pound “boyfriend” Walker. (“It was love at first sight!” Sloan jokes.) A true clotheshorse who owns tons of sweaters, Foxy splits her time between New York and New Jersey and enjoys meals cooked specially for her each day.

Zero

Zero-Male-2 years-Rottweiler Mix

Zero got his name because he has almost zero chance of leaving the pound alive. He's very skinny & has health problem as you can see from his spine, pelvis, and skull bones. He's also got a botches homemade tail dock which left a big indention on his tail. This dog is extremely grateful for anything he gets and he just needs someone to give him a chance! We suspect he was bought from a backyard breeder and when he matured into an obviously small rottie mix, the owners were no longer interested in Zero. HW pos. Please help him.

Mommy & Puppy

Can anyone help this mom and puppy? They have sarcoptic mange. There is no where to isolate them at the shelter and will have to euthanize them if they can't find a rescue. Puppy, especially, is at risk for contracting parvo. Mom is 18-months-old. Puppy's father was a German Shepherd. Owner was told over a month ago what to do for treatment, but did nothing. On New Year's Eve, she called one of our fosters and said the dogs had to go "NOW" so the foster went to get them and brought them to the shelter.

Please cross-post to anyone who may be able to help. Thanks!
