Hunters in Russia can no longer wake sleeping bears from dens during winter hibernation and shoot them because of the new law. The law was enacted on March 16th.
The cruel winter den hunt seemed to go on forever. Animal groups and activists fought for it to end for the past 15 years or more. It was brutal as it left infant bear cubs orphaned and they often died of starvation or froze to death.
However, the law is not the final solution for the bears...
Now hunters can not kill bears that are less than one year old and females with cubs under one year. This is not such a great news because this is not a clear victory for the bears. They are still under threat. The brown bears and Asiatic black bears will still be hunted in spring and summer seasons. Let's hope, that these bears could be saved too soon!
