The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is in the initial phases of gathering feedback on a proposal to establish a new wildlife refuge in the northern portions of America’s Everglades. Such a refuge – created with the support of local landowners – would provide priceless habitat for Florida panthers and other endangered American wildlife.
This is an unprecedented opportunity to conserve and restore large areas of interconnected wildlife habitat and working ranchlands (up to 150,000 acres) in the Northern Everglades.
Establishing the refuge would support restoration of the Florida Everglades – one of America’s most remarkable and fragile places.
But this isn’t just about protecting a unique and beautiful place. The refuge would also help preserve 88 threatened and endangered species, such as Florida panthers, Florida black bears, Everglades snail kites, whooping cranes, wood storks, eastern indigo snakes, gopher tortoises and Florida scrub jays.
Unfortunately, vocal opponents of the proposed refuge are threatening to drown out support for this important initiative.
