Awareness Campaigns For Dolphins
The wildlife department in Sukkur are quite worried after the death of 6 blind Indus dolphins. Two of the dolphins were found dead at Guddu while four had washed up near Ali Wahan. It is believed that the fishermen were responsible for their death because they used some poisonous chemicals to catch fish.
Water levels had been low because Sukkur Barrage had been closed for annual maintenance in January. Indus dolphins are safe throughout the year except when the barrage is closed as then the water level reduces. This is the time when fisher men use nets and chemicals to catch fish.
The wildlife department will start a campaign to tell people, especially fishermen, about the dangers to marine life. The wildlife wants to educate fishermen because they are the ones who do come in contact with the Indus dolphins regularly and should be aware of how to take care of them.
