Steve Murphy has had an interesting past couple of months: His prison was on lockdown, the "authorities" refused to give him even the most basic of vegan foods, in protest of this treatment he went on hunger strike, and then after being starved with very little food for over an entire month, his prison is off lockdown and he’s eating again… sort of.
Steve Murphy is a dedicated vegan for environmental and animal cruelty reasons, imprisoned for his alleged involvement in an environmental action, and relies on support from the outside world to make his time inside bearable. The meager vegan diet he is given in prison must be supplemented with items purchased from the commissary in order to somewhat resemble a balanced and healthy diet.
